Crawford reports about 1% water loss; staff to complete lead-and-copper and backflow surveys by year-end

At the Sept. 9 Crawford City Council meeting, Water/Sewer operator Edward Blacksheep reported August production of 7,250,000 gallons and retail sales of 7,200,923 gallons, a roughly 1% loss (about 49,000 gallons).
Blacksheep said repair work on a gallery well sensor showed the antenna was damaged, requiring that well to be cycled three to four times weekly. He told councilors the city hopes to begin a SCADA system upgrade once the budget is finalized and that crews are continuing a labor-intensive effort to visually inspect and hydro-flush service lines as part of a required lead-and-copper service-line identification survey due by year-end. The survey requires community assistance to identify properties with lead service lines, and Blacksheep said backflow surveys also must be completed by year-end; residents can submit backflow information online through the city website.
Blacksheep added that staff are evaluating installing compressors and reconnecting a dissolved-oxygen sensor at the wastewater plant, and that two staff members will attend backflow training Sept. 30–Oct. 2.
Council Member Christopher Dean also relayed operational changes at SWANN and said the solid-waste contractor will start removing overhanging tree branches and shrubs in alleys after driver complaints that vegetation was striking collection trucks.
Next steps noted by staff include continued mapping and inspection work on service connections, starting procurement for SCADA upgrades when budgeted, and public outreach to complete the lead-and-copper and backflow surveys before the end-of-year deadlines.
