Shell Guismer presented a $150,000 donation to two volunteer fire departments in Ascension Parish to buy a rescue vehicle and two Lucas automated CPR devices, officials told the council on June 18.
"Shell support of the volunteer fire department is directly aligned with community and industry needs," said JJ How, vice president and general manager of the Shell Guismer facility, thanking the council and describing the company as "part of and calling Ascension Parish our home." How said the investment would help crews respond faster to medical emergencies and crashes along the Highway 30 corridor.
A department representative noted that about 80% of volunteer fire departments in the parish now carry Lucas devices and praised industry partners for repeatedly funding costly lifesaving equipment. "We really want to thank Shell Guismer being one of our chemical plant partners," Fire Chief Nat Stevens said. "This is going to enable us to purchase an emergency response vehicle to better serve Ascension Parish."
Parish President Mr. Quimmo also acknowledged the donation during his report, and the council allowed presenters to take a group photo with the council after remarks.
The donation was presented as a ceremonial item on the agenda; council did not take a separate formal vote on acceptance during the meeting record. The parish and fire department representatives said the funds will be used to purchase the vehicle and two Lucas devices for the named volunteer departments.
