Sam Payne, Community Recreation and Events, said the total project price is $350,000 and the Veterans Remembrance Memorial group has already raised a $75,000 down payment to begin fabrication. Payne said the mayor approved a $150,000 one‑time state distribution to the project and the remaining $125,000 was expected from city enhancement funds; staff asked the committee to approve a $275,000 payment (the committee recommendation referenced use of enhancement funds and anticipated additional donations such as a governor pledge of $100,000).
Committee members thanked staff and project supporters but several expressed concern about siting and future additions to the park. Councilman White and others said larger public input on park use would be appropriate for a site that hosts multiple memorials and active recreational uses. Director Payne said the selected location has room for expansion and staff would solicit public input if council desired.
The committee moved to recommend the purchase agreement and forward it to the governing body for final approval. One committee member said they would vote no at the moment pending a closer look; the motion carried and the recommendation will go to the governing body.
