Local nonprofit seeks board support for family-strengthening grant; youth coalition promotes programs

Jill Fabian of Serenity First Counseling and the Serenity First Prevention and Support Coalition addressed the board during public comment, requesting a letter of support when the coalition applies for a three-year Governor's grant (Youth, Faith and Families) next spring. Fabian said the coalition is in its third year of the grant and plans to reapply in April or May for continued funding beginning July 1, 2025.
Fabian described a Strengthening Families program that will run for 10 weeks beginning Aug. 28; she said sessions are free, include dinner and cover communication and bonding skills for families. Fabian asked the board to spread the word and offered youth coalition members the opportunity to introduce themselves; several students (including Melanie Fabian, Corbin Hamilton and Ben Catonis) described the coalition’s goal-setting and prevention curriculum.
The public comment was entered into the record; board members did not respond with questions during the call to the public, consistent with the board’s stated public-comment procedure under Arizona open-meeting law.
