The Safford City Council on January 27 filled several leadership and liaison roles. Council members unanimously approved a motion to appoint Arnold Lopez as vice mayor. The council then approved a list of council liaisons to community organizations (Boys & Girls Club, Mount Graham Safe House, Downtown Association, watershed partnership, Arizona Community Foundation, Chamber of Commerce, Public Safety Retirement board and others) as read by staff.
On personnel matters the city manager recommended Patrick Anderson as city fire chief for calendar year 2025; council members moved and approved the recommendation. Staff noted Mr. Anderson was nominated and elected by city fire department members and that he was present at the meeting.
Staff also requested appointment of an applicant to the Planning and Zoning Commission. After reviewing applicable ordinance changes to the appointment process, the council moved and approved the appointment of Karina Pino Rees to the commission.
Next steps: new vice mayor Arnold Lopez will assume liaison duties as assigned; Patrick Anderson will serve as fire chief for calendar year 2025; HR/staff will process the planning commissioner appointment.
