P&Z hears septic enforcement update, confirms consultant and moves meetings to 1 p.m.

Marquette County Planning & Zoning staff presented department reports on April activity and ongoing enforcement work on May 7, and the committee confirmed a consultant for the county comprehensive plan and changed its regular meeting time.
Register of Deeds Nicole Ziebell described the office’s functions and reporting procedures. Land Information Director Megan Stalker outlined duties of the Land Information Officer/Real Property Lister/GIS Specialist and said she is working on Board of Review matters and open books this season; she also answered questions raised at a recent Towns Association Unit Meeting.
Zoning Administrator Jean Potter reviewed ordinance and statute language related to planning and zoning and described the county comprehensive plan update phases scheduled through the rest of 2026. Potter said enforcement work is underway: a final list of about 100 systems that did not complete required septic maintenance in 2025 will be turned over to Corporation Counsel so citations can be issued to obtain compliance.
Zoning Technician Zach Hughes gave April office statistics: six septic system installations and two onsite visits, 18 new sanitary permits reviewed, and 2,206 septic maintenance notices processed for the three-year cycle. Hughes said the office hosted Youth Government Day and assisted the Land and Water Conservation Department with the annual tree sale, identifying it as the county’s second-largest tree sale. He also reported 143 walk-ins and 572 phone calls for the month.
During review of department vouchers the committee confirmed Place Foundry as the comprehensive planning consultant for the county plan update. In other business, member Dennis Fenner asked for clarification on assessments of decks and sheds at campgrounds; Megan Stalker explained how personal property assessments are now classified.
The committee discussed its meeting schedule and agreed to move regular meetings to 1:00 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month; the motion by John Bennett, seconded by Eli Schmudlach, carried 5-0. Chair Gary Sorensen adjourned the meeting at 10:21 a.m.
The committee recorded no formal policy action on septic enforcement beyond the planned referral of noncompliant systems to Corporation Counsel; any citations or further enforcement will be processed administratively.
