Board tables conflict-of-interest policy revision, flags AI policy language for change

The Sahuarita Unified governing board discussed two policy items during a first reading and chose to table further action pending public review.

Administrators presented a proposed revision to policy GBEAA (conflict of interest) intended to clarify "direct supervision" and to restrict placement of close relatives in the same school unit or subunit to reduce potential supervisory conflicts. The proposed language would define direct supervision as work in a line of oversight within a school unit or department and would prevent close relatives from being placed in the same grade-level cohort or content department where a supervisory nexus could arise.

Board members raised questions about possible unintended consequences for smaller sites such as SDPA or single-staff subunits, and whether the rule could displace current employees. Administrators said the intent was to avoid creating retroactive disruptions; a board member explicitly stated an intent not to alter any current full-time employees as part of implementation. The board voted to table the first reading to solicit public comment and to ensure the language does not create unintended staffing difficulties.

Separately, the board reviewed a technology policy advisory addressing AI and responsible use drafted by the Arizona School Boards Association (ASBA). A member recommended removing the word "generative" from the policy heading to avoid frequent future updates as AI tools evolve; the board approved tabling this item for a second reading with that amendment.

The board will accept public input and bring both items back for subsequent review.
