Sahuarita board approves building-renewal grant applications to upgrade Walden Grove systems

Superintendent Dr. Manuel Valenzuela recommended board approval so the district can submit BRG applications to the state. "I would recommend at this time the board's approval of that building renewal grant for the Walden Grove High School fire alarm terms and conditions so that we can all sign it and send it on its way to Phoenix," he said. The motion carried after discussion and a roll-call vocal affirmation.
District staff said the existing Walden Grove fire-alarm system is compliant with the fire marshal but not to the most current code; the BRG would fund an upgrade to meet current requirements. A separate BRG would upgrade the campus-wide public-address system to meet current FCC requirements and to unify older systems across the campus.
Board members praised grant-writing and compliance work. One board member noted the effort required to compete for state funds and the audits and reporting obligations that follow receipt of grant awards.
Outcome and next steps: by approving terms and conditions the board authorized district staff to sign and forward the applications to the state School Facilities Oversight Board and the legislative process. The district will return to the board with any material updates if the funds are awarded and as contract terms are finalized.
