The Kenosha Public Works Committee on June 9 approved a sidewalk deferment request for properties in the Summers area after staff explained that few sidewalks currently exist in that neighborhood and several properties remain to be addressed.
Susan Hassell (704 47th Avenue) told the committee her newly built house is in an older area without sidewalks and said neighbors had already constructed small segments of concrete to ease future connections. "It's a new house, but in old area, there is no sidewalk," Hassell said.
A committee member questioned the long-run impact of repeated deferments, asking when the city will start ordering sidewalks if deferrals continue. "If we don't start ordering them, when do they gonna start getting put in if we we keep giving these deferrals?" the member asked, urging the committee to consider that frequent exceptions can postpone installations.
After discussion, a motion to grant the deferment was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote. The committee did not make a broader policy change at the meeting; the deferment applies to the request on the agenda and staff noted sidewalks can still be ordered at any time under ordinance provisions.
