Board honors outgoing president and recognizes volunteers, staff and students

The Sahuarita Unified School District governing board used its December meeting to acknowledge service and community contributions.
Dr John Sparks and other board members offered extended remarks recognizing Governing Board President Sher L for eight years of volunteer service; the board presented a commemorative item noting service dates "January 1, 2017 to December 31, 2024." "She came on board in 2016 ... she assumed the president's gavel as COVID came in ... with great courage and steadiness," Dr Sparks said.
Superintendent Dr Manuel Valenzuela and staff recognized multiple staff and students: four teachers received or renewed National Board Certification; a 21st Century federal grant will support a new after-school Mariachi and folklórico program next semester; and district athletic and extracurricular successes were applauded.
Coach Sam Gelardi and members of the Sahuarita High School baseball team presented a check from their decade-long golf tournament to Ruben and Kathy Espinosa of The Hope Matters Breast Cancer Research Foundation; the foundation representative described use of funds to provide free mammograms to uninsured Southern Arizona women and to support transportation for patients.
The board also named Susanna Albe as support-staff member of the month and recognized Jennifer Lee as volunteer of the month for launching and sustaining a school 'reads' mentoring program and providing in-class art lessons and supplies.
The board closed the recognitions with student leaders-in-character awards from multiple schools across the district.
