State Fair names livestock challenge sources, updates DNA submission and exhibitor guidance

Agriculture staff provided details on the State Fair’s livestock challenge, exhibitor support and procedural changes at the April 17 meeting.
Agriculture Director Vaughn Sievers and board members identified livestock challenge animal sources: cattle from Dvorak Herefords (South Dakota), sheep from Rules (South Dakota), goats from Went Show Goats (Nebraska) and swine from Beattie Family Farms (Nebraska). Sievers said the Ag team is coordinating pickups and noted that goats have already been picked up and sheep and swine pickups are scheduled as part of the challenge program.
Sievers reported the Aksarben online auction brought in about $73,000 in fundraising this year. He also said the DNA submission process will change: exhibitors must submit separate DNA entries for the Nebraska State Fair and for the Aksarben Stock Show. To assist exhibitors, staff will run a webinar series starting next Tuesday to explain the three-step process covering DNA submission, nominations and entry fees.
Board member John McKeever will serve as the State Fair’s Scale Master; the fair will continue to contract certified scale services for external events while McKeever advises on internal scale investments. Staff reiterated a May 1 target for having the State Fair entry book and health regulations posted online for exhibitors.
