ARPA site work, vendor deals and foundation fundraising advance at State Fair

Board members on April 17 heard updates on ARPA-funded capital work, vendor partnerships and foundation fundraising for improvements at Fonner Park.
Facilities Chair Tom Schellpeper and Operations Director Tina Thuernagle said ARPA projects are progressing: concrete has been poured in the northwest lot and parking improvements are taking shape to improve guest circulation. Thuernagle said operations staff meet weekly to coordinate priorities and shared optimism about how the improved ground will enhance guest experience, calling the season "It All Happening Here."
Sponsorship Director Nicki Stoltenberg and 1868 Foundation Executive Director Lindsey Koepke reviewed joint fundraising and grant-seeking activity. The 1868 Foundation reported roughly $500,000 in grant submissions and said it has provided more than $3 million in funding to the State Fair historically. Koepke described the "250 for 250" initiative to raise $250,000 for youth livestock exhibitors; the foundation had raised about $100,000 toward that goal at the time of the meeting.
Stoltenberg noted several grant applications recently submitted or in process—including Burlington Northern Santa Fe and Union Pacific—and confirmed Wilson Trailer will again lease a trailer to champion exhibitors with an option to buy at a discounted end-of-lease price. Other private partners announced included Woodhouse and Central Nebraska Trimlight, which will install grounds lighting.
Board members said fundraising and public‑private partnerships are essential to funding projects not covered in the operating budget; staff will continue to pursue grants and partner contributions while following procurement and approval processes.
