RSU 35 schedules workshop, first and second readings for proposed student cell phone policy

The RSU 35/MSAD 35 board set a schedule for a proposed student cell-phone policy after a Policy Committee review. Interim Superintendent Heidi Early Hershey told the board that Policy will meet one more time in October and that the goal is to present a draft policy at the board's Nov. 5 meeting for first reading, followed by a public workshop on Nov. 19 and a second reading in December.
Hershey said the district wants to "build in an opportunity for public feedback and comment" before any final action and noted logistical planning for the Nov. 19 workshop given room-size limits and possible signup to manage speakers.
The timetable gives the public an opportunity to review and comment: the first reading will appear during the regular Nov. 5 meeting, the workshop will provide a forum for remarks and staff responses on Nov. 19, and the board would reserve final action for a December meeting to allow time for public input.
No formal policy was adopted at this meeting; board members and committees will continue deliberations in October and use the workshop to collect community feedback before a final vote.
