Council welcomes Junior Leadership Academy students as chamber leaders outline program

North Augusta City Council welcomed Junior Leadership Academy students and adult volunteers from the Northwest Chamber of Commerce, heard short remarks from chamber leaders and students about civic engagement, and was invited to the program's graduation on June 25.
During the recognition portion of the June 15 meeting, the North Augusta City Council and mayor welcomed students and volunteers from the Junior Leadership Academy, a program administered by the Northwest Chamber of Commerce that introduces young people to civic engagement.
Tara Carol (introduced as the chamber's executive director) and chamber volunteers described the program's goals. Isaac Kelly, who said he serves as vice chair of the chamber's education and workforce committee and as chair of the foundation that supports the academy, said the foundation helps make the program financially possible. "I have been proud to serve with Tara on the education workforce committee ... as well as the chair of the foundation, which financially makes this program possible," Kelly said.
Students briefly introduced themselves and explained why they joined: Britney Key, a North Augusta High School rising senior, said she returned for her third year because the program helped prepare her for a career in education and public speaking; AJ Harris, a returning participant, said the academy helped with academic and leadership skills. Chamber leaders invited the council and public to the JLA graduation set for June 25 in the Palmetto Ballroom.
Council applauded the students and thanked the chamber for the program; no formal council action was required for the recognition.
