The Parker Parks and Recreation Committee approved the May 13 minutes and voted to proceed with three community events, while discussing logistics for a July back-to-school bash and safety concerns at local athletic facilities.
During the meeting a committee member moved and the group approved the minutes from May 13. The committee then voted to hold Trunk or Treat on Friday, Oct. 31 as a block-party format and approved Christmas in the Park for Saturday, Dec. 6.
Members discussed applying for an IDA grant that reopens in July to secure backpacks for the back-to-school bash scheduled for July 27; the committee noted it received 400 backpacks through the same grant last year and debated whether that quantity will be needed this year. "We had 400 last year," one member said, and members discussed sending backpacks to schools via the chamber's teacher breakfast to simplify distribution.
Event logistics included confirmed hot-dog donations from a contact named Val Sutter, possible chip donations, use of steam tables rather than barbecues for serving in August heat, and reservation of the community center for the bash. Members agreed to prepare a site chart for vendor and activity spots after noting past confusion about placements.
Committee members also raised safety concerns about the batting cages at Aaron Hill Field: coaches reported the metal poles are inside the cage and the space is narrow, creating hazards for batters and the person feeding balls. Members asked staff to revisit repairs and consider adding netting. The committee also discussed installing benches near playgrounds and noted cemetery rules may restrict bench materials to concrete or stone; they asked staff to clarify specifications.
No formal motion was made at the meeting on playground benches or batting-cage repairs; staff will follow up with Director Steve when he returns. The committee set its next meeting for July 15, ahead of the back-to-school event.
