Family engagement director outlines three-year plan for Sunrise House supports

Miss Agie Hart, director of the district—Family & Community Engagement department, presented the Sunrise House three-year plan and told the board the office—aims to "build Partnerships between the family and Community engagement department and the schools and the families" so students face fewer barriers to attendance.
Hart said a parent needs assessment identified tutoring, laundry detergent and alarm clocks as top barriers to regular attendance; staff used an unspecified grant to buy thousands of dollars worth of laundry detergent for McKinney-Vento families. She said Sunrise House continues to provide food, clothing and hygiene kits and is shifting to clearer expectations for parent liaisons: each liaison will organize at least two workshops a year with a minimum attendance of 10 parents.
Board members praised the Sunrise House work. Miss Sylvia Hendricks noted district recognition for community services; Miss Anamarie Stevens and Miss Kathleen Vance recommended coordinating with neighboring districts and other community agencies to expand events and transportation options. Hart said she is tracking community counts and expects parent liaisons to focus on outreach rather than duties unrelated to their job descriptions.
The presentation closed with an invitation for board members to tour the Sunrise House and see program operations firsthand. The board did not take formal action on the program during the retreat.
