Parker council backs summer "Park and Wreck" youth program, asks Parks & Rec to reduce costs

Nora and Parks & Rec staff summarized last year’s summer program run by Aaron Romo (two half-day sessions, roughly 30 kids per session) and presented an estimated cost of about $5,394 excluding staff time and increased insurance costs. The committee recommended continuing the program but acknowledged financial constraints and the town’s tight cash-flow position.

Councilors debated whether to charge a modest fee (raising concerns about expectations and equity), whether to rely on volunteers or school clubs to assist, and how to reduce facility or staffing costs (for example negotiating gym fees or finding donated resources). Council members noted timing constraints for posting a teacher and securing summer staff and encouraged Parks & Rec to pursue collaborations with existing local summer programs to avoid schedule conflicts.

After discussion, council moved and approved continuing the program with a requirement that Parks & Rec convene a follow-up session (or liaison-led meeting) to pursue cost reductions, fundraising and potential facility/collaboration agreements (school fees, club volunteers) before finalizing dates. The motion authorized the program but signaled that the council expects staff to reduce the town’s net cost through partnerships and donations.
