Union City moves forward with 'Broadband Ready' designation, authorizes EACOG to champion application

The council’s action authorizes the Erie Area Council of Governments (EACOG) to serve as the borough’s Municipal Broadband Champion, a role that will coordinate the application and help attract additional internet service providers.
Borough Manager Cindy Wells and councilors said the municipality’s permitting requirements already align with the program's recommendations. Councilor Kerns moved to proceed with the public meeting and resolution, Councilor Joyce seconded, and the motion carried unanimously per the minutes.
Council members said the designation is intended to create opportunities for more ISPs to enter the borough market, potentially offering additional options and competition for residents. The council will schedule the public meeting required by the program before formally passing the resolution.
