Elvis Lewis, president of the Juneteenth Celebration Team, said the organizers "will have a zydeco band and would like to have vendors," adding, "We putting this on for the Community and hope everyone will come out and enjoy the day." Council granted a block-party permit for the Giddings Downtown Plaza from 9 a.m. to midnight and approved a parade beginning and ending at N. Burleson Street at 10 a.m.
Director of Public Services Kenny Ray told the council there will be a city employee stationed at the railroad tracks to ensure participant safety during the parade route. Michele Manigult attended the meeting to answer organizer questions.
The council's votes were unanimous. Staff were directed to coordinate logistics with organizers, finalize vendor and entertainment plans and assign a staff member to the railroad-crossing location on the parade date.
What happens next: Event organizers and city staff will finalize logistics and vendor coordination in the weeks before the June 20 event.
