Belmont City Council voted unanimously to authorize the city to serve as the applicant for a federal grant sought by UNC Charlotte to support the Belmont Trolley program.
Staff explained the partnership with UNC Charlotte’s School of Engineering, noting a previous application required the city to be the applicant. Staff said UNC Charlotte will cover any required matching funds and that the grant includes money to reimburse the city for administration. Dr. Shin, representing UNC Charlotte, told council that approximately $300,000 of the federal award is reserved for the City of Belmont to administer the grant should the application succeed.
Council members asked whether the city would bear any financial obligation for the match and whether grant administration would consume staff time; staff and UNC Charlotte representatives said the university will handle the match and that the award includes funds for administration so the city would not be responsible for the match or for uncompensated administrative workload.
Council approved the authorization so staff may complete the application process on behalf of the city. Staff will return with any necessary agreements and final budget details if the grant is awarded.
