The Stokes County Schools Board unanimously approved the district’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) local plan, a required application for Perkins funding, after a presentation that emphasized high student outcomes and a multi-year improvement agenda.
CTE lead Mr. Atkins presented an executive summary of the 74‑page Perkins application, reporting that graduation rates for CTE concentrators exceed 95% and that postsecondary placement (workforce, two‑year, four‑year or military) also exceeds 95%. He said roughly 85% of concentrators leave the district with at least one certification or credential and noted a program quality pass rate around 84% on performance measures.
The plan identifies five priorities for the next two years: expand work‑based learning with a goal of 80 students participating in internships or pre‑apprenticeships by 2028; increase participation in career and technical student organizations such as SkillsUSA and HOSA; grow trades and industrial education (including plans to add a carpentry teacher at North Stokes); improve academic performance in science for CTE concentrators through better integration and targeted interventions; and strengthen teacher collaboration and professional learning communities.
Board members praised the work and asked operational questions about timelines and teacher sponsorship; Mr. Atkins said the application must be approved to secure Perkins funds and the board approved the plan.
What’s next: Administration will submit the application to the state as required for Perkins funding and report back on grant opportunities (including a potential career development coordinator) to support the work‑based learning expansion.
