Stokes County board delays Pine Hall sale, authorizes realtor RFP for Meadowbrook

During public comment, resident Jason Duncan urged the board to "wait till after the election to make any decisions anywhere," asking that newly elected commissioners be given a chance to consider options such as converting the school to a park or community center. Administration and board counsel reviewed the legal paths available for selling surplus property, including a public bid process with upset bids or a public auction, and noted statutory requirements for public notice before sale.
Board members described alternate interim uses and local partnerships discussed in public comment. Board member Mr. Rogers, citing community and veteran-support possibilities, said he would "table Pine Hall" and explore options that might include training or community use; another board member urged outreach to sheriff and EMS for use of the facility for training while the disposition is pending.
After discussion, the board approved a motion to hold the Pine Hall decision in abeyance and to solicit proposals from commercial realtors to market Meadowbrook. The motion carried on a roll-call recorded as four in favor and one opposed. The board also directed staff to pursue interim contacts with county first responders about potential training use and to continue community conversations about long-term options.
What’s next: Administration will issue an RFP for Meadowbrook and return to the board with proposals; Pine Hall will remain on hold pending outreach to incoming county commissioners and community stakeholders.
