Committee reviews operational planning priorities as prosecutors and sheriff report staffing pressures

Dan said the committee’s selections will feed an executive committee report for countywide resource prioritization.
Prosecutor staffing and facilities: The district attorney reported ongoing difficulty recruiting assistant district attorneys, noting higher pay in the Twin Cities and federal signing bonuses as competitive pressures. The DA also welcomed an upcoming HVAC installation for the office, saying the space has been historically very hot. "The starting wage is 76,000 for an attorney, but um the Twin Cities are at least 90ome,000," the district attorney said, describing statewide pay disparities.
Sheriff staffing and jail operations: Sheriff Kevin reported the county is housing six inmates for Buffalo County at $50 per day and described several vacancies and field-training officers; he said one candidate with correctional experience from Minnesota is set to start in June. The sheriff noted a vacant sergeant position is being held open pending promotions and backfills.
The committee did not take formal action on these operational planning or staffing updates; members agreed to bring the planning results to the executive committee and to continue the staffing conversation as part of budget discussions.
