County schedules solar-ordinance workshop as public commenters urge clearer data and setbacks

County planning staff told the commissioners June 16 that a public workshop on solar ordinances will be held Thursday at 6 p.m. in the same meeting room to discuss purpose and intent language, definitions (residential, commercial, industrial, community), grid connections and technical issues.
Nicole said the workshop will present draft purpose-and-intent language and definitions and that staff will use workshop feedback when preparing materials for the planning commission. She cautioned that the planning commission agenda will be time-limited and may not cover every item in one meeting.
During public comment, Emily Hartman urged clearer public materials and asked when the draft data would be shared. Hartman said that more than 40 citizens previously requested a 1,500-foot minimum setback for solar projects and expressed concern that the public workshop presentation formats might not allow attendees to register that preference effectively. The planning staff said draft language on intent, definitions, and some data elements will be presented at the workshop and that materials submitted there will be folded into the planning commission agenda packet.
The planning department asked citizens who want to submit written proposals for restrictions or technical comments to do so before the July 7 planning commission if possible; staff indicated a July 1 submission date would be helpful to allow time for packet preparation.
