Orrville officials preview park events, repairs and pickleball court plans

Mayor Plybon told the council that Orr Park remains "a centerpiece of activity" for softball, swimming, reunions and fireworks and highlighted two remaining Rehm Pavilion performances scheduled for July 25 and Aug. 8, each to include food trucks. The mayor also announced citywide yard sales on Aug. 2–3, Orrville Community Day on Aug. 17 and that Orrville schools will begin Aug. 20, welcoming new superintendent David Roth.
Safety-Service Director Wheeler reported the Service Department is doing concrete repairs on Church near Hilltop and reviewed logistics from recent OFFA softball tournaments and July 4 events, noting that police, utilities and service personnel assisted. Wheeler said Verizon installed a temporary cell tower during the July event to maintain service and that the city expects attendance figures from the carrier.
On recreation expansion, Wheeler said he met with VASCO to request a quote for additional pickleball courts that the city could begin this fall, with coating scheduled next spring. He said state funding was denied for the project but that the city has received $10,000 from the Wayne County Community Foundation; council will consider formal legislation after the department receives estimates and determines whether capital-fund changes are necessary.
Council President Vance briefly noted prior discussions about changing the charter's two-thirds rule but said any change must wait until the next charter review in 10 years. The meeting adjourned at 7:51 p.m.; the next regular meeting is Sept. 3, 2024.
