Forest Hills board approves districtwide free breakfast program for 2026–27

The Forest Hills Board of Education voted Tuesday to operate a free breakfast program at all district elementary, middle and high schools and the transition center for the 2026–27 school year.

Mrs. Davis, the district staff member who briefed the board, said the recommendation follows the revised school code (section 1272A) and state rules that tie eligibility for new state meal funding to districts operating breakfast programs. "We are recommending that we offer the breakfast program to all of our schools for next year," she said.

The recommendation, the board was told, rests on a state budget decision that has not been finalized. Mrs. Davis said the Michigan school meals program is expected to be funded in the state budget, and that if the program later required students to pay, participation typically falls; the district would then return with an amended recommendation.

After no public comments during the hearing, the board approved the motion — mover and seconder not specified on the record — by roll-call vote. The members recorded as voting yes were Dr. Michelle; Mode; Mrs. Dor; Mrs. Chan; Dr. Boston; and a member listed in the transcript as "Mrs. Yes." The motion passed and the board formally closed the public hearing on the breakfast program.

The board did not record any dissenting or abstaining votes on the motion. The district will implement the breakfast program for the 2026–27 year as approved and monitor state funding; staff indicated they would return with changes if state support terms or district participation levels change.
