West Irondequoit board creates insurance reserve, approves transport contracts and other fiscal items

The West Irondequoit Central School District Board of Education voted June 18 to establish an insurance reserve fund under New York General Municipal Law section 6N, approved funding limits for restricted reserves and accepted transportation contract awards for the 2026–27 school year.
Administration introduced the insurance reserve resolution as authorized under state law; Dr. Johnson urged caution on implementation and recommended the board work with the superintendent’s office to define an appropriate target funding level. "I worry that the board needs to... take some time and think about what we want that to look like," Dr. Johnson said, noting that creating a reserve is a significant step for a district with a limited number of existing reserve accounts.
The resolution passed on a recorded voice vote reported as 4–1 in favor. The board also approved proposed funding limits for restricted reserves as presented.
On transportation, district staff reported results of a May RFP. First Student won the bid for large-bus runs and field trips; the administration reported "first student's rates went up by about 17%" while noting Transpo submitted competitive pricing for midsize and wheelchair services. The board approved the recommended contracts.
The board also approved the district’s 2026–27 adult breakfast/lunch prices and recommended keeping milk at $0.60; the administration noted the district remains in the federal Community Eligibility Program and will continue to provide free meals to students.
Other operational items the board approved during the meeting included commodity and supply bids included in the consent agenda. Board members asked administration to return with implementation details for the new insurance reserve so the board can determine an ideal funding level over time.
