Beltrami County coroner reports 209 deaths reported to regional office in 2025; substance data shows fentanyl and methamphetamine presence

"Of the deaths that were reported to us, we were responsible for signing the death certificate in 40 cases," Dr. Piper said, noting that 28 of those involved autopsies while 12 were medical-record reviews.
Among the 40 jurisdiction-assumed cases, Dr. Piper said the manner-of-death breakdown included 19 accidents, 13 natural deaths, six suicides and two undetermined cases; she noted five of the six suicides involved gunshot wounds. The presenter also summarized substance findings in Beltrami investigations: "For Beltrami specifically, four individuals had fentanyl in their system, eight had methamphetamine, and one had cocaine." She added that heroin was low in the local data and that fentanyl has largely replaced heroin in many regions.
Commissioners asked whether some decedents had multiple substances; Dr. Piper confirmed there were combination cases, including one person with both fentanyl and methamphetamine and one with fentanyl and cocaine.
Dr. Piper closed by offering to return next year with follow-up analysis if commissioners wanted more detail.
