Saline County proclaims June as Pride Month and Elder Abuse Awareness Month

The Saline County Board of Commissioners on June 16 voted to adopt two proclamations: one recognizing June as Pride Month and another designating June 2026 as Elder Abuse Awareness Month.
Sunflower Queen Jen Courtney, identified in the meeting as vice president of the Smoky Hill Equality Coalition, read the Pride Month proclamation and outlined recent and upcoming community events, including a June Pride event that had taken place the first Saturday of the month, a planned end-of-summer barbecue for high school students, and a community movie night. "We will be tabling at Wichita Pride," Courtney said in response to a question about Juneteenth involvement.
Brandy Baum, who was introduced as the domestic violence and elder abuse program manager for DVAC, presented the Elder Abuse Awareness Month proclamation and summarized national statistics cited in the proclamation (including an NCOA finding that about one in 10 seniors experience mistreatment and published estimates of elder financial exploitation losses). Baum described recent outreach at senior centers, training at nursing homes, and scheduled visits to Arbor Court and other local facilities.
Both proclamations were moved, seconded, and approved by voice vote.
