County engineer reports on bridge and road repairs; board rejects high bids for chip-seal project

Mike, the county engineer, briefed the board on ongoing bridge and road work, including deck forming on Bridge 307, reconstruction and pipe work on several county routes, and rock-resurfacing and patching operations on W42 and 350th Street.
The engineer said a cattle-pass failure northeast of Calmer closed a bridge on 22nd Avenue; one lane has since reopened while crews alternate repair locations. He also reported an unusually high number of trees down after a windstorm and praised crews for clearing the debris.
On grant activity, Mike said the CBH CHBP grant was submitted on June 5 and that none of the county’s bridges were selected as semifinalists by the Iowa DOT. He told the board that bids for a chip-seal (spill painting) project came in higher than expected and asked for a formal board resolution rejecting all bids so the county could notify the DOT.
The board moved and seconded a resolution to reject the bids for the chip-seal/paving project; the motion carried on a voice vote. The engineer said the county will re-evaluate the project and rebid when market conditions improve.
Other routine maintenance updates included completion of DuraPatcher work on W40 in preparation for an auto seal, progress on A14 project scheduling (projected start on June 22), and ongoing coordination with neighboring counties on shared equipment and resources.
