Emmaus council appoints lifelong resident Leanne Bookman to vacated seat

Emmaus Borough Council appointed Leanne Bookman to fill the vacancy left by Councilmember Kate Watt and sworn her into office during the June 15 meeting.

Bookman, who told the council she was born and raised in Emmaus and has long-standing family ties to downtown businesses, will serve the balance of an approximately 1½-year term after the council voted 4–2. Council President Brent moved to nominate Bookman; the motion was seconded and approved on a roll-call vote (yes: Levenberg, Brem, Brown, Defrain; no: Anders, Balot). Mayor administered the oath immediately after the vote.

Why it matters: the appointment restores the council’s full complement and adds a council member with deep local roots at a moment when members said they want to preserve neighborhood character while managing growth. In discussing the nomination, councilors stressed the value of institutional memory and local knowledge in overseeing historic assets and everyday municipal services.

Bookman told councilors she wants to learn the borough’s operations and serve on committees that address community safety, parks and downtown issues. Councilors asked about availability for committee work and about the time commitment during budget season; Bookman said she can accommodate meeting schedules.

The president of council urged all four unsuccessful applicants to consider running in the next regular election, saying the borough needs engaged candidates. The council did not change the borough’s rules for filling vacancies and confirmed the appointee will stand for election at the next applicable municipal election if she seeks a full term.

What happens next: Bookman will assume the seat immediately and attend committee assignments; councilors said she will be integrated into committee schedules and briefed on pending items.
