Lewis Hyatt of Miller & Associates told the Village of Valparaiso Board of Trustees on June 13, 2023, that a recent pipe scan of the village sewer system identified sections needing repair and recommended a program of repair and improvement.
Hyatt said the firm has submitted an application to the state and, pending any required state approvals, will advertise the project for potential bidders. Hyatt described the presentation as the basis for developing precise repair estimates and a procurement schedule.
The presentation triggered discussion of financing and timing. The village accountant advised using funds that are readily available to pay for sewer liner work rather than investing additional funds until estimates were finalized. Trustee discussion noted the board will wait for firm contractor estimates before committing to further investment decisions.
Supervisor Nick Sanders separately reported continuing utility work in the village: 225 automatic water meter readers have been installed, with 75 remaining to complete the planned rollout.
Next steps: the consultant will proceed with procurement steps after state approval and the board will review contractor estimates and any related budget choices when those figures are available.
