The Van Buren County Board of Supervisors voted Nov. 12 to award a bridge replacement contract worth $808,273.40 to Iowa Bridge & Culvert, L.C. for project BROS-C089(107)-8J-89, a replacement for the bridge on 235th Road over Reeds Creek.
County Engineer Ryne Thornburg told the board the project had been bid through the Iowa Department of Transportation process and that county staff followed required steps for notifications, hearings and letting. On the board’s motion and recommendation from the county engineer, the board adopted Resolution #11-12-2025B and, by the same resolution, designated the county engineer to execute the contracts on behalf of the board once the contractor provides the required bond and insurance. The motion passed on a 3-0 roll call vote.
The resolution cites section 331.301 of the Code of Iowa as authority for the action and states the board’s intent to accept the low bid in the county’s interest. The board also reviewed related secondary-roads matters, including potential road closures and vacations (setting a public hearing on those matters was tabled), and was informed that a state contractor had resumed work on Highway 16 and Route V64 between Douds and Highway 16.
The board’s vote establishes the contract award; final execution of construction contracts is contingent on receipt of the contractor’s bond and certificate of insurance as required by the bid documents and DOT procedures.
