On June 15 the Newton School Committee voted unanimously to reaffirm the district’s long‑range facilities priorities—listing Ward, Underwood, Brown and Newton South as the next major capital priorities—and approved the city recommendation to proceed with planning separate replacement buildings for Ward and Underwood elementary schools rather than pursuing consolidation.
Jason framed the motion as an affirmation that priorities developed through prior technical analyses and city‑school collaboration remain appropriate. Facility staff described MSBA’s recent building condition survey and other technical inputs used to rank needs. Several members noted MSBA scoring is relative across districts and that sequencing will remain dependent on funding, the MSBA process and city capital planning.
The committee also voted to move forward with separate replacement planning for Ward and Underwood; this decision responds to community preference and the city’s feasibility analysis. Members stressed that reaffirmation does not lock the committee into a rigid timetable—projects will still be sequenced by funding availability and MSBA eligibility.
The committee will continue to coordinate with the mayor’s office and public buildings staff on enrollment projections, site feasibility work and MSBA submission strategy over the summer.
