Committee members and staff described the policy as an attempt to balance educator professional judgment with community expectations for regularity, horizontal alignment across same grades, and a gradual vertical progression through the grades. The policy includes suggested time‑range benchmarks (cited as guidance): a 45–60 minute nightly range as a reference point by grade 5 and 70–85 minutes by grade 8 (respectively reflecting roughly 10 minutes per grade rule of thumb used by principals). Committee members emphasized the language is a guideline rather than a strict cap, and that building plans will allow flexibility and local context.
Jason and Victor described the policy as a starting point for greater alignment; the superintendent said handbook language with operational guidance will come back to the committee for approval this fall. The committee agreed to monitor implementation, solicit parent and teacher feedback (including family surveys), and return with a review in the fall to evaluate whether the guidance is working.
The motion to adopt the policy passed 9–0. Staff and principals will draft building guidance and present handbooks for committee review before the school year.
