Commissioners accept offer for former Jamesville High School (NERSBA) property

The Martin County Board of Commissioners voted April 10 to accept an offer from the Martin County Board of Education to assume ownership of the former Jamesville High School property, which has been occupied by the Northeast Regional School of Biotechnology and Agriscience (NERSBA).
County staff noted that disposal of former school property is governed by North Carolina General Statute §115C-518, which requires the board of education to offer the property to the county at a fair market price or a negotiated price before disposing of it by other means. The Board of Education had directed Superintendent Chris Mansfield to send the offer to the commissioners.
Commissioner Elmo “Butch” Lilley made the motion to accept the offer and authorized the County Manager and School Superintendent to work out details; Commissioner Joe R. Ayers seconded the motion and the board approved it unanimously. Commissioners said they wished to keep the school-related program in that part of Martin County and to continue supporting NERSBA’s STEM focus.
The county will now negotiate terms with the Board of Education per the statute and report back to the commissioners on any purchase terms or transfer arrangements.
