Commissioners authorize letter seeking Forest Service permission for temporary detour on Main Boulder Road

Park County commissioners approved a motion April 14 to sign a letter to the U.S. Forest Service asking for authorization to construct a temporary detour on Main Boulder Road to bypass a collapsed bridge and restore legal access across the river.
County staff said the detour would allow access needed for bridge repair work and public recreational use. Stacy Bridal, who surveyed the site with Forest Service and fisheries biologists in August 2024, told commissioners the proposed crossing would cause minimal sediment disturbance and would be on the east side of the river near remnants of an earlier road. Lloyd Brew, president of the Sweetgrass County Recreation Association, said reopening the road would aid resource protection and maintenance of a leased public cabin and that the Forest Service had reached out to meet and discuss next steps.
Commissioner Vermillion moved to sign the letter to the Forest Service for authorization to construct the temporary detour; the motion was seconded and carried with the board voting “aye.” Staff said the Forest Service requested a meeting and outreach is scheduled to continue.
