The Tangipahoa Parish School Board approved several capital and infrastructure items on June 16.
The board authorized a servitude at Ponchula High School for Bell South Telecommunications, Inc. to relocate equipment related to a nearby roundabout and accepted a $1,000 payment for undergrounding the equipment; the motion was approved unanimously.
For Kentwood High School the board awarded a campuswide roof replacement to the lowest apparent bidder, Roofing Solutions, for $267,700 plus a $26,770 (10%) contingency. Board members noted the architect's estimate had been $388,500 and confirmed Hurricane Ida funds will be used to pay for the work.
The board also awarded the Independence Leadership Academy Phase 2 eight-classroom addition to Guy Hopkins Construction, Inc. for $2,667,000 with a 10% contingency ($266,700). The original court-approved budget for the project had been about $3.7 million; the successful bid was roughly $1 million below that amount. Board members asked about whether the contractor had prior references and noted state law prohibits local-preference adjustments on these types of projects; the vendor was reported to hold a Louisiana contractor's license.
Board members asked administration who will supervise the projects and which architects and firms are overseeing construction; Holly Smith (architect on the Independence project, referenced in the packet) and administration representatives were referenced as project contacts. All motions passed on roll-call votes.
