Mayor and trustees discuss banning unattended donation boxes, consider enforcement to cite landowners

Trustee Kley told the board that residents have reported recurring problems with donation boxes left by charities, saying the boxes leave garbage and the organizations are often unresponsive. “We have donation boxes… they have garbage all over the pickups are not enough and the charities are not responsive,” Kley said, and added that the village should consider stronger measures, up to banning them.
Trustee Kley proposed identifying the box locations, finding the landowners who lease space for the boxes, and issuing letters and tickets to property owners who fail to maintain their property. A building-department staff member said the department will take the locations and investigate. No formal motion or vote was taken; trustees asked staff to follow up and report back.
Kley suggested promoting local resale shops and established charities with storefronts as alternatives for donations. The board did not draft ordinance text during the meeting but discussed bringing an ordinance or amended permit process to a future session.
