The Tiburon Town Diversity Inclusion Task Force voted on June 17 to recommend that the Town Council consider allocating $10,000 to a proposed Fall Harvest children’s festival.
The chair moved to forward the proposal and the motion was seconded; in a roll-call voice vote recorded during the meeting, the responses were: Council member Frederick — yes; Council member Ryan — yes; Council member and chair — yes; Vice Mayor Nickfar — yes; Mayor Wner — no; Hia Wash — yes; Mina Godfrieded — yes. Terresa Coleman, Nin Lour and Vice Chair Tina Pike were recorded as absent. The motion carried and the recommendation will be considered by the Town Council.
Why it mattered: members supported the idea of a child-centered, nature-focused community event but some questioned whether a general children’s festival is within the Task Force’s specific mission to advance diversity and inclusion. One member noted that similar general-community events are sometimes organized by the ranch or by the Town Council rather than a diversity-focused body and suggested the council could decide on a different funding source.
How the proponents described it: Howie, the organizer named on the proposal, said the festival is intended to be child-first, to make use of Tiburon’s natural environment and to provide family-focused activities that are not centered on Main Street business events. The proposal in the meeting packet requested that the Task Force recommend the $10,000 allocation to the Town Council.
Outcome and next steps: the Task Force’s vote was a recommendation only; the Town Council will make any final decision about funding and which budget it would use. The Task Force did not appropriate funds during the June 17 meeting.
Recorded action: The meeting record lists a formal recommendation motion to forward the festival proposal and $10,000 funding request to the Town Council; the Task Force’s action at the June 17 meeting was to approve and forward that recommendation.
