Broken Bow council approves volunteer fire department bylaws, consent agenda and moves into closed session on leveed tax litigation

BROKEN BOW, Neb. — The Broken Bow City Council conducted routine business and a series of formal votes at its Feb. 11 meeting before briefly entering closed session to discuss potential litigation.
The council unanimously approved the consent agenda, which included minutes from Jan. 28 and Jan. 31 and the Bills to Date; the bills list presented in the meeting record totaled $198,099.66, with biweekly payroll of $72,531.16 and a grand total of $270,630.82.
Councilmember Travis Kleeb moved, and Joe Wamsley seconded, to approve updated bylaws for the Broken Bow Volunteer Fire Department. Administrator David Schmidt said the bylaws had been reviewed by City Attorney Jason White and that updates were minor and focused on required training attendance and officer duties. The motion passed with Smith, Kleeb and Wamsley voting aye and Councilmember Paul Holland recording an abstention.
During mayor and council comments, Mayor Rodney W. Sonnichsen said he would direct City Administrator David Schmidt to prepare a resolution for the next meeting that, if approved, would authorize staff to notify Custer County Communications of the city’s desire to terminate the current interlocal agreement. "In the interest of transparency I want to let the council and the public know that I will be instructing Dave Schmidt, City Administrator, to have a Resolution prepared for the next meeting that if passed will authorize him to send a notice to Custer County Communications regarding our desire to terminate the current interlocal agreement," Sonnichsen said.
At 6:09 p.m. the council voted to go into closed session for a strategy session regarding potential litigation over leveed property tax assessment against the City of Broken Bow; the closed session attendees named in the record included the mayor, all councilmembers, City Administrator David Schmidt, City Clerk Jennifer Waterhouse, Deputy Clerk Jacob Holcomb and City Treasurer LeeAnn Taylor. The council exited closed session at 6:28 p.m. and adjourned at 6:30 p.m.
