A community group presented a plan to upgrade the aging Melham Disc Golf Course at the Jan. 14 Broken Bow City Council meeting, requesting about $15,000 in grants and donations to improve playability and host tournaments.
Presenter Ethan Harders said the current layout uses homemade baskets that do not reliably catch discs and lacks tee pads; the proposed improvements include adding nine holes, installing concrete tee pads, replacing the baskets with PDGA-approved commercial baskets and updating signage. Harders said the design will use the existing course footprint and avoid the Story Walk walking path.
City Administrator Schmidt told the council the city is prohibited from donating money to the project but that a partnership including shared labor could be possible because the course sits in an existing park. No city cash commitment or formal vote on the plan was recorded at the Jan. 14 meeting.
Organizers said improved amenities would boost participation and enable tournaments that could draw tourism to Broken Bow.
