Fire chief says Round Valley Road fire threatened Broken Bow; 33 departments and 225 firefighters responded

Fire Chief Dustin Watson told the Broken Bow City Council on Jan. 14 that the Round Valley Road fire in December approached within roughly 1.0 to 1.25 miles of the city and destroyed three uninhabited structures.
Watson said 33 fire departments provided mutual aid, 82 pieces of equipment were used and 225 firefighters assisted in suppression. He listed 95 calls for Broken Bow Fire Department services in 2024, including 60 inside the city and responses ranging from vehicle accidents to structure fires.
"Please try to avoid the area during these types of emergencies," Watson said, citing heavy smoke, intense wind and numerous personnel and vehicles operating along the roads. He said when the public stops or pulls over to watch, it can create hazards and impede responder communication and movement.
Mayor Rod Sonnichsen echoed the need for preparedness, urging residents to have evacuation plans. Chief Watson also reminded the public that Broken Bow has an ordinance prohibiting burning within city limits and noted two permitless burning calls in 2024.
