Jennifer Corbino, administrative assistant/secretary for St. Carlo Audis Parish, asked the Columbiana City Council on June 16 for permission to hold a rosary procession on Aug. 15, beginning at 8:30 a.m. and concluding with a 10:00 a.m. Mass. Father Chad Johnson stood with Corbino as she described a route that would start at the parish, travel down Seventh Street and along the sidewalks of North Main around the circle, then return to the church.
Corbino said the parish plans to hand out handmade rosaries and single-cut flowers from parish gardens and invited neighboring churches and the Holy Daughters of Mary from Steubenville to participate. “We would like to walk down 7th Street and then utilize the sidewalks of North Main to go up around the circle … and then down Seventh Street to proceed into Mass that starts at 10:00,” Corbino said. She asked the city to accommodate brief traffic impacts around the circle and noted they would coordinate with the police chief on enforcement.
City staff confirmed event forms were filed and that the police chief and staff would coordinate traffic enforcement based on estimated attendance. The council moved to approve the event and, after a roll-call vote, approved the request as presented.
During the manager’s report, City Manager Lance announced two community funding items. He said the Farmers Charitable Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Farmers National Bank (Canfield), donated $5,000 to support the Garden of Eden project. Lance also said Governor Mike DeWine signed Senate Bill 450 and that Columbiana was awarded $300,000 for phase two of the Columbiana Project Playground, thanking Senator Alcatrona and Representative Monica Blazedale for supporting the application.
Lance described next steps for the procession as coordination with the police chief on traffic enforcement and routine permitting. The council’s approvals and Lance’s announcements were procedural actions taken during the meeting; staff will follow up with the parish on event logistics and with relevant agencies to begin work on the playground phase and the Garden of Eden project.
The event request was approved by roll call and the council directed staff to coordinate implementation details with the police department and event organizers.
