Council creates Main Street advisory board to steer downtown reinvestment

The Denton City Council on June 16 approved an ordinance to establish a Main Street advisory board to oversee downtown revitalization efforts and to maintain the city’s Texas Main Street accreditation. Britney Sotelo, economic development director, presented the board structure required by the Texas Historical Commission and outlined membership: seven voting members (property and business owners, hospitality/tourism representative, historic‑preservation representation) and two ex‑officio seats (Denton County and a university representative).
Sotelo said the Main Street program focuses on economic vitality, design, organization and promotion and that the city has administered a Main Street program since 1990; the recent organizational changes required a city‑based board to maintain accreditation. The board will meet quarterly and board members will serve two‑year terms and may serve up to three consecutive terms. Staff said annual downtown reinvestment grant programs and collaboration with city departments will be part of the board’s activities.
Council moved and passed the ordinance on a 6–0 vote. Staff said the board will follow city policies for boards and commissions and that staff will review opportunities to consolidate other downtown committees in a future board‑consolidation effort.
