Whitfield County reviews March finances, ratifies grants and approves contracts and purchases
Summary
The board approved the March financial statement, ratified continuation grants for Domestic Violence and Juvenile Court programs, accepted a Firehouse Subs grant, extended an SPCR contract for the DA's office, awarded a jail food contract to Kellwell, and approved equipment purchases including Motorola radios.
At its May 11 meeting the Whitfield County Board of Commissioners approved the March 2026 financial statement and several funding and contracting actions.
Chief Finance Officer Debbie Godfrey presented financial figures: March LOST collections were $1,398,109 (6.56% above budgeted collections of $1,312,008), and March TAVT collections were $600,232; year-to-date revenues of $12,117,683 were $137,420 (1.12%) below projections and YTD expenditures were $15,708,466, $566,545 (3.48%) below projections. The board voted 4-0 to accept the financial statement.
The board ratified State Crisis Intervention Program continuation grants administered by the Georgia Criminal Justice Coordinating Council: $49,669 in supplemental funds extending a Domestic Violence Court counselor grant through Sept. 30, 2026, and $37,017 in supplemental funds extending the Juvenile Court Handgun Prevention Program through Sept. 30, 2026. Chairman had signed the agreements earlier because of timing; the board ratified acceptance 4-0.
Other actions approved included: declaring a 2013 Ford Explorer surplus for sale on GovDeals.com (with law-enforcement equipment to be removed and returned to the DA's Office); approving an SPCR contract extension for the District Attorney's office from July 1, 2026–June 30, 2027 for $379,937.13; accepting a Firehouse Subs grant of $39,758 to buy two inflatable rescue boats, two motors, a trailer and accessories for the Fire Department; awarding the jail food services contract to Kellwell Food Management (the county estimates approximately $42,000 annual savings); purchasing four Motorola portable radios for $28,214.60 to outfit new patrol vehicles; and approving the UGA County Extension contract for July 1, 2026–June 30, 2027 for $97,475 (first six months already in the 2026 budget).
All motions described above carried on recorded votes as listed in the minutes, generally by 4-0 counts. The board directed staff to proceed with contract execution and grant administration as presented.
Why it matters: the bundle of approvals affects public-safety equipment, corrections operations, extension services and grant-funded court programs and includes several budgetary and procurement decisions that will affect county operations over the next fiscal year.
