Resident asks council permission to discharge rifles on 15-acre parcel; ordinance review requested

Council member Craig Meyer relayed an email from resident Aleks Cederblade requesting council permission to discharge rifles on his 15-acre property. Meyer said Cederblade believed his parcel may meet Minnesota DNR spacing guidelines, but that ch. 300 of the municipal code currently prohibits the discharge of firearms within city limits without council approval.
Meyer said staff will review the ordinance to determine whether updates are warranted to address larger parcels and to compare city code with DNR spacing standards. Meyer will inform Cederblade that, under the present ordinance, permission cannot be granted administratively and council review is required.
No council vote occurred; staff will return options at an upcoming workshop for council consideration.
