The Hingham School Committee on June 15 approved five student‑health and medication policies, moving the district’s policy manual into closer alignment with Massachusetts law and DESE guidance.
Ally Anderson, chair of the committee, led the second‑read consideration of the policies. The approved items were: a complete rewrite of the ADF wellness policy; updates to JLCB (immunization of students) including language on "sincere religious beliefs" to mirror state law; revisions to EBB (first aid); a rewrite of JLCD (administering medicines to students); and a new JLCDC policy for self‑administration and self‑care of medications.
The committee discussed the policy drafts with staff, noting DESE‑recommended language and the need to adopt certain changes before the start of the next school year. "We do need to have this in place by August 17th or 18th," a member observed regarding the DESE timeline for timeout/seclusion/restraint‑related guidance; the committee indicated it would return for second reads on required items where procedures remain under development.
All five policies were moved, seconded and adopted by roll‑call votes. Committee members said the district had worked with nursing staff and legal counsel to ensure revisions follow state law and best practice.
What comes next: Where procedures remain to be developed (for example, DESE‑issued procedural guidance related to restraint and seclusion), administration said it will return with recommended procedures, training plans, and timeline for mandatory implementation and staff training.
