Hodgkins said the town is in a five-year agreement that began in July 2025 with starting rates of $89 per ton and annual increases capped at 4 percent, and that the town had budgeted $92 per ton for the coming year. "We received a curveball," Hodgkins said, describing MWE's notice that non-member towns, including Mechanic Falls, will be moved to $110 per ton.
The council did not take formal action at the meeting. Hodgkins told the council the change exceeds the contracted cap that had been expected and said staff will pursue more information; he called for follow-up discussion at future meetings as details and implications are clarified.
