Mechanic Falls council approves RSU 16 rebate line-item and a slate of routine measures

The Mechanic Falls Town Council on Oct. 7 adopted a series of unanimous motions, including creating a new account for a $150,813 rebate from RSU 16 and approving routine administrative items such as updated general assistance (GA) maximums and a cannabis license renewal.

The actions matter to local budgets and service delivery: the council instructed staff to hold the $150,813 RSU rebate in a new line-item and to apply principal and interest from that amount to next year’s RSU bill when the town receives it. Councilors said the change was a response to an overcharge the town identified.

Councilors moved through a largely procedural agenda. Councilor Paula Stotts made the motion to accept the updated GA maximums and later moved to adopt changes to the GA ordinance; both motions were seconded by Councilor Ray Lavoie and recorded as passing 4-0. The council also accepted the renewal of Tyler Monahan’s Eclipse cannabis license, again 4-0.

Appointments and administrative approvals were part of the evening. Paul Weller was appointed to the Mechanic Falls Development Commission and Taylor DiDonato was appointed to the Board of Appeals and the Budget Committee — both appointments pending background checks. The council accepted the department monthly reports and approved meeting minutes (the minutes were accepted 3-0 with Chair Darrell Young recorded as abstaining).

On municipal services and fees, the council set the transfer station mattress disposal fee at $25, regardless of size, and approved two tax abatements: $614.11 to John Field and $90.09 to Fairpoint Communications for double taxation. Councilors also accepted the election worker list for the Nov. 5 election and a $200 donation from the Minot Corner United Methodist Susanna Wesley Circle to the Santa Program. Councilor Stotts moved to make the Spirit of Christmas an official town committee; Councilor Berry seconded and the motion passed 4-0. Councilor Lavoie asked that any unused committee funds remain in that account rather than rolling to undesignated fund balance.

No executive session was held. The meeting concluded with a motion to adjourn at 8:20 p.m.
